he year 2017 has been great for Xiaomi as the Chinese brand managed to displace Samsung for the numero uno slot in the Indian smartphone market. The company owes a part of its success to Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, which it claims was its best-selling smartphone during the year 2017. The company has now launched successor of its most popular smartphone in the country, Redmi Note 5 . Redmi Note 5 is the company's first smartphone in this price segment to come with bezel-less display and a selfie flash. Xiaomi also claims that it has made some aesthetic changes to the handset vis-a-vis its predecessor. However, if one goes by pure-play specs then Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is not much different from Redmi Note 4.
We used the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 for some time to test whether it's a worthy upgrade or not. So, here is our complete review of the smartphone.

Redmi Note 5 Design and Display
At first glance, you may actually feel that you are holding Redmi Note 4 and not Redmi Note 5. The smartphone shares almost identical looks as its predecessor. The similarity is all the more prominent at the rear side. The front of the smartphone has some difference to offer. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is the first budget smartphone of the company to come with a bezel-less display. The device comes with a same chassis with antenna lines running across the device but the a large and bright display is its highlight.
The smartphone comes with minimal bezels on the sides and this time the smartphone also comes with a selfie light flash. The smartphone is also slightly slimmer as compared to the Redmi Note 4. The handset is appears sturdy and boasts of good build quality. In fact, it is quite solid when compared to most smartphones in the market.
Redmi Note 5 comes with a 5.99-inch display with round edges and matte finish metal unibody. The power button and volume rockers are placed on the right, while the SIM card tray sits on the left. The audio jack and infrared sensors are located on the top and the charging port and speaker are at the bottom. The back side of the device houses a 12MP snapper with dual-LED flash and circular fingerprint sensor.
In all, Redmi Note 5 offers nothing new on the design front as there is nothing new and revolutionary that the device offers.
Display is the major highlight of Xiaomi Redmi Note 5. This is the first time that the company has included a full-screen display in a Note series smartphone. The smartphone packs a 5.99-inch full-HD+ display with 18:9 aspect ratio and 1080x2160 pixel resolution. The 2.5D curved glass display is coated with a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass on top which protects it from damage and scratches.
The display is sharp and the colours are also vivid with deep contrast. The images and videos also offer accurate colour reproduction but it is a bit reflective when used under direct sunlight. Other than this, the overall performance of the display is good for a sub-10K smartphone. Like all the other Xiaomi mobile, the Redmi Note 5 also comes with a Reading mode, which reduces the blue light emission and prevent the eyes from any kind of strain.
Redmi Note 5 Performance and Camera
It seems that the company devoted all its attention in making the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro as it has almost not little improvement on the hardware aspect of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5. The smartphone packs the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor as there is in the Redmi Note 4.
The handset offers a balanced and efficient performance. It managed to do most tasks quite efficiently, be it gaming, multi-tasking or using heavy apps. We did not witnesse any lag or slowness during any of the tasks. The processor is not that great as the Snapdragon 636, but it is for a budget smartphones. In order to test the performance of the smartphone we also ran two benchmark tests. The device scored 77,682 on AnTuTu and 962 and 4324 on Geekbench.
The company has introduced two variants of the device -- 3GB RAM and 32GB storage and 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The users can add more storage by installing a microSD card. The device packs a 4,000 mAh battery, which is less when compared to Redmi Note 4, which has 4100 mAh battery capacity. The battery easily lasts up to a day on single charge. The company has not incorporated fast charging but despite that the smartphone charges quickly. The audio experience is also decent on both headphones and loudspeakers. The call quality and signal reception was also fine and we faced very few call drops.

Despite being the first launch of the year, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 runs Android 7.0 Nougat operating system topped with the MIUI 9 layer of the company. The device offers all the features of Android Nougat and comes with all the standard apps from Xiaomi. These include pre-loaded apps like Amazon, WPS Office and Hungama. A company spokesperson also told us that they are working on Android Oreo Update for the smartphone and that it will be rolled out to Redmi Note 5 soon.
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 offers similar camera specifications as the Redmi Note 4. The smartphone sports a 12MP rear camera with dual tone LED flash and a 5MP front shooter with Selfie Light.
However, the company has altered a few things in the camera department. The rear camera of the Redmi Note 5 features a 12MP shooter with larger pixel size of 1.25um pixels and f/2.2 aperture. In proper light or daylight, the handset managed to deliver some great shots. Moreover, the images captured in macro mode also turned out be good with apt colour reproduction and detailing.
